Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is a form of localized external corrosion that occurs in carbon and low alloy steel equipment that has been insulated. This corrosion occurs when water is absorbed by, or collected in the insulation. The equipment begins to corrode as it is exposed to water and oxygen. CUI is most common in refineries and process plants that typically operate equipment at high temperatures.

CUI requires 3 items to occur: steel, water, and air. Atmospheric moisture, process variations, leaks, and maintenance cause water buildup on the equipment, and it is virtually impossible to eliminate. Our only solution is to change the chemical/electrical reaction causing the corrosion.

CASL OFFERS A COUPLE OF SOLUTIONS TO PROTECT AGAINST THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF CUI BY:

  1. Applying a non-metallic barrier coating to the steel that prohibits the reaction from occurring through paint or epoxy.
  2. Applying a metallic barrier coating to the steel to provide a physical barrier to the water, and to significantly change the corrosion reaction.

Slurry Valves

CASL provides a comprehensive remanufacturing program for severe service slurry valves. Using either standard chrome carbide overlay for moderate duty service, or CASL’s unique spray and fuse applied tungsten carbide overlay (“WCO”) for severe service, mine operators can expect a fully remanufactured valve with a coated gate and liner system designed to meet your specific application.

OUR WCO LINER AND GATE SYSTEMS:

  • Yield significantly longer service life than standard chrome carbide liners
  • Can be repaired, reducing ongoing owning and operating cost
  • Are available in a number of thicknesses: 6mm – 14mm WCO liner systems available

CASL’S COMPLETE VALVE REMANUFACTURING SERVICE INCLUDES:

  • Complete valve disassembly, inspection and rebuild
  • Valve body weld build-up and machining
  • Gate weld repair and hardfacing
  • Inspection and testing of all welds
  • Hydraulic cylinders remanufactured to new condition
  • MPI inspection of critical welds
  • Tungsten or chrome carbide overlaid wear liners

Overlaid Piping Spools

Client’s seeking prolonged service life for slurry pipe exposed to a severe environment, such as oilsands tailings, will benefit from CASL’s turnkey spool fabrication and overlay service. CASL’s unique spray and fuse tungsten carbide overlay process allows application of eutectic tungsten carbides, which provide better impact resistance and wear properties than virtually all other spool coating or liner systems. Enjoy the benefit of Magnum’s extensively field tested ST66 alloy or engage our materials science team to develop a custom blend to meet a specific performance objective.
